Class #7: Presentations and AAC Programs

Today's class was a lot of fun with all of the groups presenting their Dollar Store finds. It was really motivating to see so many creative AT options there are at such a low cost. Everyone seemed really excited to share what they had found and it was interesting how many different uses people were able to come up with for the same objects. One take away for me was finding low tech AT that could be used to help support emotional health. This was an area I hadn't thought about and I liked the idea of creating calming jars, using slippery water snakes and other objects as a way to help students sit and think or to focus on when sharing their feelings. This is something I will definitely bring into my classroom in the fall.
Other favourites:
*The pool noodle tagger
*The nesting balls/scarf holder
*The car mitt turned into a weighted lap buddy
*The medicine bottle magnifier
*The colourful flutter boards used for alternative seating

After our low-tech presentations we began to explore Augmented and Alternative Communication programs which are available for different devices. It was great to be able to explore what is out there and to begin to critically look at the programs which are available for our non-verbal students. Here is a Mind Map display of what our group found.
